Enganchada al formato cuadrado — Obsessed with the square format

Y pasa un día de repente, te das cuenta de que algunas de tus fotos siguen un patrón, un formato que no has buscado conscientemente, sino que ha ido apareciendo sin más, quizás como señal de ese estilo propio que todos buscamos definir.

Pues eso me ha pasado a mí poco a poco con el formato cuadrado.

And suddenly it happens one day, when you just realise that some of your photos follow a pattern, kind of a format, which you haven’t been consciously looking for, but it just shows up. Maybe a sign of the own photographic style we all want to define.

Same has happened to me little by little with the square format.

Hace años todas mis fotos tenían un formato alargado (lo que sería un formato 3:2), bien en horizontal o en vertical. Pero con el paso del tiempo comencé a experimentar con el formato cuadrado, viendo que la composición de algunas imágenes ganaban mucho al usarlo. Poco a poco, no sólo editaba en formato cuadrado sino que también tomaba fotos de escenas que sabía iban a quedar bien en formato cuadrado. Mentalmente estaba buscando ya composiciones en 1×1.

Years ago all my photos had a long format (that would be a 3:2 format), either horizontal or vertical. But after some time I started experimenting with the square format, and I realized that the composition of some images really improved with this format. Little by little, I started not only editing photos in square format but also taking photos I knew they would look great in that format. Mentally I was already looking for compositions in 1×1.

Y claro, después de ver que en muchas ocasiones me es más sencillo buscar una composición de este tipo, he decidido juntar en este post algunas de las razones por las que creo que el formato cuadrado nos puede facilita las cosas:

Composición – Composition

Me ha pasado a menudo, que algunas fotos que no me llegaban a convencer mucho en el formato clásico, han mejorado mucho aplicándoles un formato cuadrado. Normalmente esto es debido a que en la imagen original había algún elemento que sobraba en la composición, demasiado espacio negativo o simplemente no llegaba a plasmar suficientemente bien el objeto principal en la foto. Os recomiendo darle una pasada a fotos de hace algún tiempo, jugando un poco con la composición 1×1. Seguro que os lleváis más de una sorpresa.

It happens to me quite often with photos I’m not so convinced of, that they just work perfectly in square format. Normally it’s because in the original image there is some unneeded element, which doesn’t work well in the composition. Or maybe there is too much empty space left. Or the main object in the picture is not clear enough. I do really recommend to pick up some old photos and experiment with them in 1×1 format. Surely you’ll get surprised with the results.

Simetría y regla de los tercios – Symmetry and the rule of thirds

El peso de la simetría en este tipo de fotos es mucho mayor que en otros formatos. Así como en otros formatos la regla de los tercios puede tener más importancia (aunque tampoco hay que seguirla 100%), con el formato cuadrado no tenemos que tener miedo a colocar un elemento en el centro de la imagen con un composición simétrica porque…funciona!!.

The importance of symmetry in this kind of photos is bigger than with any other format. In other formats the rule of thirds gains relevance (although you don’t have to follow it 100%), but with the square format you don’t have to be worried anymore about setting the main object in the middle of the frame with a perfect symmetrical composition because..it just works!!.

Diagonales, formas o elementos repetidos, sombras..el formato cuadrado lo acepta todo y además con un efecto muy natural, donde nada sobre ni nada falta.

Diagonals, shapes or repetitive elements, shadows..the square format accepts everything, with a natural effect where nothing is missed, nothing is too much.

Simplicidad – Simplicity

Como decía antes, el formato cuadrado nos puede ayudar a eliminar aquellos elementos de nuestra foto que no nos llegan a convencer. Las composiciones sencillas, casi minimalistas, se ven muy favorecidas por el 1×1, y ya si encima editamos la imagen en blanco y negro, doble efecto.

As I previously said, the square format can be really helpful to remove from a picture those elements, which we’re not really convinced of. Simple composition, almost minimalistic, can benefit from 1×1, and if besides of that we develop the picture in black&white, it doubles the effect.
